International Harvester Co. has asked United Auto Workers union leaders to help the company slash $100 million in employment costs by next October. International Harvester is said to face losses of up to $500 million this year due to a soft market for its products — trucks, agricultural equipment and construction machinery. North Carolina’s total memployment rate for Octobei •ose for the first time in 4 months. At 5.6 percent, the rate exceeded September’s 5.4 percent but was considerably below October 1980s 6.4 percent. The Box Office for Tryon Little Theater’s “Pgymalion” opens today from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 to 4 p.m. The play opens Thursday at 8:30 p.m. and other performances will be held Friday and Saturday at 8:30. There will be a matinee Saturday at 2 p.m. The Columbus office of Tryon Federal Savings and Loan opens Tuesday at 9 a.m. for business. The first call came at 12:35 a.m. at Rick Campbell’s house on Markham Road. Extensive damage was done to the living room and kitchen according to Fire Chief Clarence Scoggins. The second call came at 2:45 a.m. to Grace Underwood’s house on School Street. There was extension damage to the first and 2nd floor. Chief Clarence Scoggins stated that the cause of the fires was undetermined.
